Identity Theft Scams Over the Phone And The Internet

Identity theft scams are a big business these days. Trying to find out personal information in any way possible to gain access to another persons money and property has become significantly easier with the advent of the internet. These days, though, there is much more awareness and protective software available to combat this type of theft. But, unfortunately, as more software is invented, more viruses are created to attack and disable even the toughest programs.

Protecting credit cards numbers and banking information on the internet can be helped by following a few simple rules. Only shop on internet sites that are familiar. Many people can illegally obtain personal information from credit card transactions from purchases made on an unprotected site. Identity theft scams occur when a person steals someone elses credit card number, social security number, and any other information that is not theirs.

Additionally, you should never post a social security number online. Make sure to print off the confirmation number after placing an order. If the charge received on the monthly bill is different, alert the company the purchase was made from as well as the credit card company. Catching a mistake or theft early could help you avoid costly identity theft scams.

Identity theft scams can also occur over the phone. Never answer personal questions about bank accounts, credit card accounts, or other information over the phone. Legitimate credit cars companies never ask for account numbers over the phone. Hang up the phone and if the person gave a company name, call the Better Business Bureau and report the company.

Even though identity theft scams are hard to prove, filing a complaint can help. Theft of this nature is particularly harmful for older people who willingly answer questions over the phone out of habit or politeness.

Identity theft can affect anyone at any time during their life. It is important to understand the risks of buying things on the internet and answering questions over the phone that can give another person the opportunity to steal money before you fall into the snare of an identity theft scam.
